Innovation, genius, disruption. As a tech startup, we hear these buzzwords often. Catchy as they may be, to us they oversimplify the result of an often grueling endeavor: the creative process. Enter The Open Studio, a new blog by FiftyThree where we’ll examine how people bring ideas to life through creative thinking and alternative solutions.
Early on, we learned that the success of a company lies not just in its employees, but in the people whose lives you touch through the things you make. On their own, Paper, Pencil, and Mix are just products. In the hands of people, they become tools, vehicles that help capture, develop, and share ideas. Ideas that literally make the world go round, from the 90-year-old grandmother in Japan playing with technology for the first time, to the renowned architect imagining his next building, to the student trying to ace an exam with the help of visual notes.
The Open Studio is where we’ll share these stories, and where we hope you’ll come for inspiration, humor, and learning. We’ll be curating stories that capture our imagination, terrific creations being made with Paper, and interviews with creative thinkers around the world. It’s also where we’ll pull back the curtain and invite you into our internal creative processes at FiftyThree.
To kick off our new blog, we’re thrilled to bring you our first series, 53 Creative New Yorkers You Should Know About. Every Tuesday, we’ll introduce you to people who inspire us in myriad ways, from designers like Paula Scher whose iconic imagery has helped shape the cultural landscape of New York, to teachers like Yamilée Toussaint, who uses dance to help young girls relate to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education in a whole new way.
At the helm of The Open Studio is us, Amy Cao and Rachel Romano, a former Cooking Channel show creator, and a bestselling author of two books. We’re an odd couple who’ve become great collaborators, relying on one another for everything from brainstorming, to line editing, to cat videos. We like to think that we’re a working example of what FiftyThree strives to do – bring together people with different backgrounds, approaches, and ideas.
Along with our teammates across engineering, design, and community, we’re proud to invite you inside our new home on the web.
